Get Fired Up: How to Embrace the Vibrant Energy of Summer in Your Yoga Practice

Summer is just around the bend and as temperatures begin to rise the last thing you may be thinking about is ways to sweat it out, however, it may be one of the best times to up your practice! Life ebbs in seasons of yin and yang and summer is most definitely a “yang” season characterized as it is almost jam packed with lively events and activities that keep us on the go. Practicing yoga can help us maintain that balance as we slow things down and use the methods to build energy to fuel us for those times of fun. 

During this time of year the warm temperatures and higher levels of humidity help to keep our muscles loose which can increase fluidity of movement and flexibility. There is less need to warm up when we’re already feeling the heat. In addition, regular practice can help us adapt to the rising temperatures and increased sweating. We always encourage safe habits such as proper hydration and knowing your body's limits, but now is a great time to use the season to challenge yourself! 

Here are some of our best recommendations for practicing yoga this summer:

Energizing Poses (Asanas)

The season of summer is all about the heart. Which is no surprise as it is often a time of vibrancy and life! It takes a lot of energy to keep up with all of the things we love to do this time of year, so it makes sense to follow suit with yoga asanas that promote energy and opening of the heart chakra. These can include:

  • Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar)

  • Camel Pose (Ustrasana)

  • Cat / Cow Flows (Bitilasana Marjaryasana)

  • Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)

  • Half-Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana)

Breathing Techniques (Pranayama)

Breathing is one of the most important ways we can regulate our bodies and calm our minds. While there are many breathing techniques that can help to energize us, during the hotter temperatures the following cooling breath techniques can often be beneficial. 

Sitali Pranayama (Cooling Breath) is a wonderful example of this technique. Roll your tongue upwards to create a tube and stick it out of your mouth into the air (a small “O” shape with your lips also works) and slowly breathe inwards through the opening and release through your nose. 

Cool Down Poses (Asanas)

A great way to find balance after an energizing class is techniques that help your body cool down.

These can be used after yoga practice or even after another activity that gets your blood pumping:

  • Legs up the wall (Viparita Karani)

  • Supported Bridge Pose (Setubandha Sarvangasana Bolster)

  • Wind Release Pose (Pawanmuktasana)

  • Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
